Wedi ei eni a’i fagu ym Mhontarddulais, addysgwyd Eric Jones yn Ysgol Ramadeg y Bechgyn, Tregwyr, cyn graddio  mewn Cerddoriaeth ym Mhrifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd.  Cychwynnodd ei yrfa ddysgu yn Llanelli, cyn dod maes o law yn Bennaeth Cerddoriaeth a’r Celfyddydau Creadigol yn Ysgol Mynyddbach, Abertawe.  Ar ôl cyfnod fel Dirprwy Bennaeth yn Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr (Abertawe), aeth yn Brifathro ar Ysgol Bro Myrddin (Caerfyrddin) ym 1997, gan ymddeol yn 2006.  Mae’n Gymrawd Coleg Cerdd Y Drindod Llundain, ac fe’i derbyniwyd er anrhydedd i Urdd Ofydd Gorsedd y Beirdd ym 1996 am ei gyfraniad i gerddoriaeth yng Nghymru. Yn 2010 fe’i hanrhydeddwyd ymhellach i Urdd Derwydd yr Orsedd ar gyfrif gwasanaeth maith ac arbennig i’r Orsedd a’r Eisteddfod.

Bu'n Gyfeilydd i Gor Meibion Pontarddulais rhwng 1973 a 1991, ac ers 2004 ef yw Llywydd y Cor.
 
Fel cyfansoddwr cyhoeddodd chwe chyfrol o ganeuon ynghyd â nifer sylweddol o ddarnau corawl a cherddoriaeth ar gyfer y theatr.  Derbyniodd nifer o  gomisiynau gan ystod eang o gorau a chyrff eraill o fewn Cymru a thu hwnt, a dewisir ei gerddoriaeth yn gyson fel darnau prawf mewn cystadlaethau cenedlaethol, ei recordio a'i darlledu ar radio a theledu.

Born and brought up in Pontarddulais, Eric Jones was educated at Gowerton Boys’ Grammar School before graduating in Music from the University of Wales Cardiff. He started his teaching career in Llanelli, and subsequently became Head of Music and Creative Arts at Mynyddbach School, Swansea. After a period as Deputy Headmaster at Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr, he became in 1997 Headmaster of Ysgol Bro Myrddin, the Welsh medium comprehensive school at Carmarthen, retiring in 2006. He is a  Fellow of the Trinity College of Music, London, and he was admitted as an honorary member to the Ovate Order of the Gorsedd of Bards in 1996 for his services to music in Wales, and elevated to the Druid Order in 2010 for long and distinguished service to the Eisteddfod and the Gorsedd.

He was the Accompanist of the Pontarddulais Male Choir between 1973 and 1991, and since 2004 is the President of the Choir.
 
As a composer he has published six volumes of songs, a large number of choral works as well as music for the theatre.  He has received commissions from a wide range of choirs and other bodies within Wales and beyond, and his music is frequently chosen as test pieces in national competitive festivals, recorded on disc and broadcast on radio and television.
